Some Thoughts On Personal Style

When I think about my personal style, feminine is not a word that comes to mind. I tend to gravitate towards more androgynous styles, a limited color palette, and denim year round. The only exception is my love for floral and frilly dresses, which I like to save for special occasions. But every now and then, I find a piece that makes me rethink this formula altogether. That’s where this burnt orange peasant blouse comes in. This blouse has me wanting to embrace a softer, more romantic style for summer, paired with my usual staples. And why not switch it up sometimes, right? It’s just clothing after all, and we all need a bit of experimentation once in a while.

In the past few years, I’ve started to realize that the things I feel most comfortable and feminine in are the androgynous outfits. I love the simplicity of an oversized white button down or a crew neck t-shirt. I LOVE a pair of loafers, like they are just my all around favorite shoe to wear. More recently, I’ve really started to love the understated coolness of a good pair of denim that fits like a glove. And I cannot tell you how much I’ve enjoyed building my modest jewelry collection. Seriously, for the longest time I didn’t wear any because I just didn’t know what I liked when it came to jewelry. Now I feel like I’m at a point where I pretty much know what I like, when it comes to personal style. And now I’m finally ready to experiment a little more and see if I can surprise myself. At the end of the day, it’s all about what you feel comfortable in, as that will always be what you look best in, so whether something fits your “personal style” becomes less important.

I think a good place to start when it comes to finding your personal style, is to look at people you admire. Following fashion bloggers on Instagram and reading blogs has been such a great source of inspiration, but I will admit, it can be a lot of noise sometimes. There are so many people who I follow with such unique personal style, and while I may love the way their style suites them, it might be completely different from what I like for myself. So it’s always good to take the inspiration with a grain of salt and instead think about why you like their style. Is it the way that person interprets trends or plays with proportions? There are ways to be inspired by others’ personal style and incorporate it into your own while still feeling like yourself.
