My Morning Routine

Jessica Harumi 1

These days I rely so much on routine to keep myself motivated and productive. My mornings are so important to me because they set me up for success for the rest of the day. And then by contrast, there are the days when I wake up feeling stressed about something, jump right into it and then find myself showering and getting dressed at 2 in the afternoon. That’s why following a certain routine really helps me start the day in the right mindset and finish it that way too. So today I thought I’d share my morning routine that keeps me on track.

Start The Night Before

Lately I’ve been staying up later than usual because honestly, the evenings just meld together for me now and weeknights feel the same as weekends. This, in turn, means a slightly later wake up time too, which luckily has not had that much of a negative impact on my day. But I do try to be in bed around the same time every night, and I avoid super late nights like the plague. I’m someone who needs like 10 hours of sleep a night and I’ve just accepted that those 2am tv-binges are way to hard to recover from and therefore not worth it. I’m also most productive and clear-headed in the mornings so I want to make the most of that.

Set The Pace

One big act of self-care for me is to give myself enough time to slowly get ready in the morning. Not feeling rushed in the mornings helps me start the day in a calm headspace, which sets the pace for the rest of the day. When I start my morning frantically, it’s hard to shake the feeling later on and I end up feeling like I’m falling behind all day. Some great options for setting the pace in the morning is by activities like meditation or journaling. I find that just getting ready is itself enough mental stimulation for me, it’s also something I can do on autopilot before having to really focus on a more involved task.

Take Time To Get Ready

I always start my morning with a shower, which helps me wake up, and then I take my time doing my hair, getting dressed and doing my makeup. I’ve talked about how my WFH uniform really helps me cut down on decision making in the morning, while also making me feel comfortable and polished. I’ve also found that putting on a bit of makeup every day makes me feel so much more prepared to work. I don’t notice what a difference it makes until I skip a day, stay in my pajamas and then wonder why I want to nap for two hours in the middle of the afternoon. Getting ready in the morning is the mental equivalent of commuting nowadays, and I’m so glad I’ve learned to use this to my advantage.

The Morning Brew Ritual

Something I look forward to every morning now is making myself a coffee or tea. It’s the final thing I do before sitting down to work and it’s become a comforting ritual. We don’t have a coffee maker in our house, so it’s always a pour over, french press, or occasionally an espresso from the moka pot. As I’m writing this it makes sense why this feels like a ritual now, because it’s a bit more involved than a coffee maker but I kind of like that about it. I’ve also become a lover of toast for breakfast: avo toast, egg over easy on toast, butter & jam toast and a new quarantine fav, beans on toast.

So that’s all for my morning routine. This was fun to share and I would love to share more about my blogger WFH routine as well if that’s something you’d be interested in. Let me know in the comments what your morning routine looks like. I’m curious to see how ours overlap. Thanks so much for reading! xx Jessica
