Dressing For Summer At Home

Things are heating up here in San Diego, but we’re currently still enjoying the mildly warm weather of late spring (which in all honesty I wish lasted until August). I’ve started to think about my summer capsule wardrobe, you can watch my wardrobe planning video here, and those pieces I already own. So let’s have a little chat about dressing for summer at home.

Lived In Boxy Shirts

One style I want to wear a lot of this summer is a big boxy short sleeve button up. There are so many directions you can go with this one. I love how they look unbuttoned over a tank top or bathing suit. They also look great paired with a simple pair of denim cutoffs or tailored shorts for an easy yet put together look. This style can take on a cool vintage resort wear vibe too. Try a silk or linen style to update the classic cotton shirt you love year round.

Warm Weather Basics

This year I’m planning to update some of my basics for higher quality pieces. I don’t wear a lot of tank tops, except under knitwear and most of the pieces I have are old fast fashion ones that are literally coming apart. So this year I’ve been on the hunt for pieces that will last. One place I’ve got at the top of my list is Organic Basics. I was so impressed by the quality of their basic white tees so now I’m looking to try out the Invisible Tank or the Tencel Lite Tank.

Stretchy Lounge Pants

This trend pairs nicely with the fact that we’re spending a whole lot more time at home these days. I love looser silhouette for pants that border on loungewear/pajamas but look great paired with some simple basics and a few accessories. I especially love them in linen fabrics or anything airy and breezy.

Accessories For The Hell Of It

Putting on jewelry every day has been a big mood lifter for me. It’s the finishing touch to getting ready in the morning and it means I get more wear out of my favorite pieces. I’ve been loving slipping on my gold stacker or dome ring to admire while I type away at my laptop. And I’ve been wearing my Ray Ban Round sunnies as much as possible when I’m outside. I do miss handbags though. For a while there I had resorted to exclusively using a canvas tote to run errands. I’ve since made a decision to break out my beloved bags every now and then so I can use the things I love instead of leaving them in the dust bags.

Times are crazy right now, writing about summer fashion (and what to wear at home) feels all the more absurd. Rather than ignore the reality of our circumstances, I’d like to just take a moment to acknowledge the humor in this and appreciate this platform for what it is; a creative solace and a welcome distraction. So if you’re feeling the quarantine blues right about now, I highly recommend putting on some sunnies, breaking out your favorite handbag and just having a good ole dress up session, even if it’s just for a trip to the grocery store or the backyard.
