Fun Things To Do This Summer

Jessica Harumi Summer Bucket List 1

Each summer back in elementary school I used to write a long list of all the fun things I wanted to do; things like swimming, writing a story, sleepovers, etc. (having trouble gauging how nerdy this is, tbh) I would use these lists as a way to keep track of everything I got up to but also as a way to stave off boredom. I never got through the full list and I would continue to add to it throughout the summer so it was more aspirational than an exact plan.

Recently the idea popped into my head to do this again as an adult, especially this summer when we’re all much more limited in what we can do and where we can go. So today I’m sharing a few fun activities I plan to do this summer in the hopes that it will inspire you to do the same! Think of it as New Year’s Resolutions pt. 2 but with an emphasis on having fun.

Discover New Music

I’ve been looking for some new music on and off for the past few months and summer is always a great time for that. I used to spend hours discovering new music and I really want to get back into that. As of very late, I’ve been listening to Parcels, LoveLeo, Jungle, anything upbeat that I can dance around too. I’d also love to get back into more electronic music, which I used to listen to almost exclusively. If you have any great Spotify playlist suggestions, pop them in the comments and help a girl out.

Learn A New Cocktail

My drink for spring was the Aperol Spritz and now I’m inspired to find a new cocktail to try. I recently saw Gabby (@gabrielasage) on IG making a Korean cocktail (similar recipe here) with Soju, lychee soda and those delicious little yogurt drinks, pretty much all of my favorite flavors so I definitely want to try that one next. I’m also planning to make at least one batch of frosé (frozen rosé) and sangria before the season’s over. What new cocktail are you planning to whip up at home?

Have A ‘Just For Fun’ Hobby

A couple months ago I bought my first two tarot card decks and have been wanting to learn more about them. It’s nice to do something just for fun that doesn’t include a computer screen and I’m not really that into puzzles or embroidery (wish I were). Tarot appeals to the part of my personality that loves mysticism, art and exploring my intuitive mind. It’s also an activity that require practice and persistence to become more comfortable with, for which I now have ample time to indulge in.

Get Outdoors

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Kyle and I took a bike ride and hike through Mission Trails in San Diego and it was the first time I’d exercised outdoors in an embarrassingly long time. It’s nice to know that some trails are opening up to the public and everyone is responsibly keeping distance and wearing masks while enjoying nature. I’ve had a lot of anxiety around being in public spaces when I don’t need to be and I feel like this little outing eased my nerves a bit and allowed me to see that people are still practicing precaution out there. But as always, be safe, use your best judgement and consult with your county’s regulations first.

Check In With Friends

This is something I want to be much better at during the summer. I definitely did not prioritize this in the first couple months of social distancing, as I was so wrapped up in my own mind about what I should be doing and how I should be feeling. It continues to be a process to prioritize mental health. But now I’m coming to realize that it’s OKAY to not be okay right now, we’re all going through it. So just call your friends, check in on them and you’ll feel better for it.
