Redecorate Without Buying New

Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time gathering interiors inspiration on my Pinterest and I got the urge to do a little reshuffle of my dresser. Changing things up decor-wise every once in a while is a great way to breath some fresh life into a space. It’s also a fun way to get more decorating practice without needing to buy a bunch of new things. And it helps you appreciate all the special things you already own and show them off in a better light. So today I wanted to share a few tips for redecorating without buying anything new.

Shop Your Home

The first step I took in my redecorating process was to look around my home for a mixture of display items and things of sentimental value to fill the space with. I pulled the bottle of sand, which belongs to Kyle, from the mantlepiece in the living room and the small bowl of seashells were already on the dresser. I like the combination of natural materials together and the sentimental value adds a touch of Kyle to an otherwise very Jessica area of the home. I also decided to move the Marshall speaker from the living room into the bedroom so I can get more use of it.

Display Your Favorite Things

I love the look of a lived in space with some organized clutter strewn about. This definitely depends on your own preference. Maybe you prefer belongings stored away in the drawers for a clean and sleek look. I suppose I’m not really a minimalist in that sense because for me it’s more comforting to see some of my favorite items on display and it helps me get more use out of them. I love having all my everyday jewelry displayed on a stand for easy access. Don’t be afraid to keep some beauty or makeup bits out, if they don’t feel cluttered.

Use The Art You Have Or Make Your Own

While I had recently purchased some new artwork for another room, I played around with the idea of switching them out with the prints in the bedroom but ultimately decided against it. I just love how soothing those two prints look and because of their size I think they work well to fill the space nicely. If you are keen on changing out some artwork, check to see if you already have other prints or frames to be combined in a new way. And if you’re more creatively inclined try making your own abstract art print (takes minimal painting skills) or a digital work that you can print out and hang up.

Play With Proportions

When grouping items, make sure to keep proportions in mind. You don’t have to find all big items or little items, you can create varying heights by stacking books, hanging artwork and textiles, or leaning prints against the wall. You can also play with layering depths by placing items slightly in front of others, like the way I placed the larger print slightly behind the monstera plant. Having a mixture of heights will give the overall space a cohesive and balanced look.

Group Like Items

Usually when decorating a space I like to put items into small groups which I then move around together until I find the right balance. You can group smaller items together depending on their size, color scheme or function. I love the way the aromatherapy spray looks next to the dark ceramic vase so those two items became a little bookend for the side of the dresser. Aim for two to five groups, depending on the size of the space and don’t be afraid to add stacked books or other less obvious items into the mix.

Add Greenery

I love having greenery in my home but because of the lighting in certain rooms, my placement for plants are limited. I previously had a smaller monstera on the side of the dresser next to the window and I knew I wanted to keep that. But I ended up switching it out for a slightly larger one from the dining room. If you don’t have a lot of plants in your home, don’t feel like you need to go out and buy one. I’ve started many of my plants from clippings, including the two Monsteras which can from one plant. I’d love to write more about propagation and house plant care so leave a comments if that’s something you’re interested in. And if keeping house plants alive is not your strong point, consider just clipping some foliage on your next walk and drying it for a similar effect.
