My Capsule Wardrobe Goals for 2021

Jessica Harumi My Capsule Wardrobe Goals For 2021 1

Recently I’ve been doing a whole lot of organizing and rearranging as I settle into my new room and make it feel all bright, airy and cozy. Now that I’ve finally unpacked the whole of my wardrobe and have it all neatly organized and visible in one place, I am finally starting to think about it more holistically. Going through the process of moving all my clothes around tediously folding and storing every item really opened my eyes to just how much I still own and where I could try pairing down and simplifying my wardrobe. So today I thought I’d share some of the things that worked in the past that I want to keep doing along with a few goals I’ve made for myself this year to improve my capsule wardrobe.

Some things I want to continue…

Shopping Ethically & Sustainably: This time last year I made a trip up to Costa Mesa to Uniqlo to shop for some new basics. Shortly after that I decided to finally give up fast fashion for good. I was slow to completely let go of the few fast fashion brands I still shopped at because I thought it would just be too hard to find affordable and ethical alternatives. But a year later, I’m quite confident in my ability to shop sustainably for anything I might add to my closet, including shopping secondhand first.

Making 10x10 Mini Capsules: This has become such a useful practice for me when I start to feel myself getting bored with my wardrobe. Creating a 10x10 helps me focus on those pieces that work well for the day to day and then filter in pieces I don’t wear as often. They also give me loads of outfit inspiration beyond just the 10 day period. In fact, some of my favorite go-to outfit formulas came from my 10x10 experiments.

Sticking With A Minimal Color Palette: Every time I’ve told myself I want to add more color to my wardrobe I’ve failed miserably. I think it’s one of those things that just sounds like a good idea even though it’s not really in line with what I actually like to wear. And there have been a few instances where I did add a colorful pieces to my wardrobe (like my Minor History bag) and it worked out really well. But for the most part I always gravitate towards neutrals so that’s what I plan to stick to this year.

Sharing My Seasonal Capsules: This is something I’ve done in the past but sort of fell out of practice with towards the end of the year (what with moving right before the holidays). Last year I got into the habit of sharing my wardrobe planing process at the start of each season, then sharing my full capsule and any new pieces I added. You can check out my Capsule Wardrobe playlist on YouTube for all that good stuff. I’d like to continue this as it helps me stay organized and track my purchases and it’s just fun to share the process with you all!

Some things I want to start doing…

Regularly Replace My Basics: I’m still in the process of working out exactly how many basic tees and tanks I need in my wardrobe. These items tend to need replacing more often because I wear them nearly every day and ya know, coffee, grease and sweat stains happen! Luckily basics are something ethical and sustainable brands do really well and I’ve already found some favorite brands for those. Now it’s just a matter of replacing them slowly and as needed.

Budget For Investment Pieces: There are a few ethical brands that I’ve been wanting to try out for myself (and all of you, in the name of ahem ‘research’). This year I’d like to really solidify my budget and stick with it so I can work towards those pieces that are more of an investment and that I know will perfectly fill a hole in my wardrobe. Basically, I want to get better at researching investment pieces and saving towards them slowly and deliberately.

Update My Pajamas: So I don’t actually consider my pajamas as part of my capsule wardrobe but they still make up a large portion of the overall number of clothes I own and they just so happen to spark the least amount of joy for me. This year I’d like to do a big sort out and decide which pieces I’d like to keep and which pieces I’ve been holding onto a little too long. If I do make any pajama purchases in 2021 (which is highly likely) I’d like to invest in some feel good pieces that will last.

So those are all my capsule wardrobe goals for the new year. I will likely pinpoint other areas that need work throughout the year so this is sort of a working list if you will. But I’m excited to revisit things at the end of the year to see how I did. If there’s any specific capsule wardrobe that you find particularly useful for me to share or that you’d like to see this year let me know in the comments!
