December Playlist

Greetings from a warm, sunny December in Cape Town! It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that this month’s playlist is decidedly devoid of Christmas music. Instead it’s filled with upbeat, dancey tunes, although I did throw in a spot of Miles Davis for good measure.

This has been a good month for discovering some new artists and just generally learning a bit more about all the music that’s making me all happy and toe-tappy (ugh, sorry) lately. For example, I’ve been hearing a house remix of 70s soul musician Darondo’s “Didn’t I,” and later realized that he was actually born in Berkeley, CA. Not sure if this will interest anyone else but I love little music factoids like this.

A few things I’ve had on repeat lately include the soul-infused house track “Ya Just Need 2 Believe In Yaself” (how good is that title?) by Folamour and the similarly jazzy, chill house track “Emotional Intelligence” from Chaos in the CBD. Then there’s Jitwam, a psych-soul jazz musician, well I’m not really sure how to classify him, whose song “Opendoors” is possibly the best thing I’ve heard recently, a real serotonin boost. There’s a few repeat artists from last month’s playlist, such as NEIL FRANCES, Romare and Loverground, which is always a good indication to me that they’ve become firm favorites.

Other stuff I’ve been enjoying outside of Spotify, I recently caught a set by Cape Town-based DJ Kyle Russouw at the Blue Room in Woodstock that was such a good time. I’d listened to him in the States so it was pretty cool, and completely unexpected, that I would actually get to see him irl too.

Anyways, that’s all for this month (and year!) in music. Check out all of the monthly playlists from 2021 over on my Spotify. Wishing you all a festive rest of the month, filled with good company and good tunes!
