A Minimalist Living Room Refresh

Jessica Harumi A Minimalist Living Room Refresh

Over the past couple of months I’ve been slowly working on changing some things around in the living room and giving the space a little refresh. Then online furniture retailer AllModern kindly got in touch and offered to furnish a few pieces to give the space a more minimalist feel. I absolutely love how it turned out and the living room feels all the more calm and relaxed now. So today I wanted to walk you through the space and talk about the small changes that helped give the space a minimalist update.

Matching Coffee Table & End Tables

One of the first things I knew I wanted to update was the coffee table and end tables. Originally there was a much larger square coffee table that didn’t work well in the small space. It was also an awkward shape and didn’t match the style of the sofa and accent chair. With AllModern’s help I picked out the Conrad Coffee Table, a lovely Mid Century oval shape in a dark walnut color. This piece is much smaller and more streamlined so it feels balanced with the rest of the furniture. I also picked up the matching end tables that are a higher and more round shape. The cohesion between the coffee table and end tables really helps tie the space together. The dark walnut color helps to warm up the space a bit and the pieces are such nice quality, so I’m pretty happy with them.

Working in Existing Pieces

The living room already contained a few larger pieces like the West Elm Auburn Sofa and Auburn Chair as well as the Souk Wool Graphite Area Rug, which you may remember from my old apartment. I knew we wanted to keep these pieces in the space as they already fit with the more minimalist aesthetic I was going for. To change things up I decided to focus on the smaller details like lighting, decor and soft furnishings. Because the space is relatively small, I wanted to keep as few pieces there so as not to make it feel too cramped and crowded.

A Muted Color Palette

Since the sofa is a relaxing medium gray shade and the lilac velvet accent chair provides a nice pop of color, I wanted to keep the soft furnishings in a light neutral and white color scheme. I updated the cushions with some matching linen throw pillows and a woven pillow from Target that complimented the color of the sofa and tied in the white in the area rug. One thing that really helps a space feel more minimalist in my mind is a stripped back color palette with lots of white and off white and natural colors and materials as accents. Most of the color in the space, aside from the accent chair, comes from the warm natural wood and greenery.

Minimalist Decor Pieces

I love the use of natural materials like clay and ceramic. There is overhead lighting in the space but I wanted to add a softer dimmable lamp to brighten up the corner. I found this ceramic shade lamp at Target and instantly fell in love with the off-white fluted, textured base and large white shade. I also wanted to add a bold, geometric vase as an interesting accent. I found this Ceramic Totem Vase at West Elm and it comes in several shapes and in black too so there’s always the option of mixing and matching it with a few more vases to create an interesting decor element. For the coffee table I kept things simple with a marble tray from West Elm to hold some candles and coasters. I stacked a few coffee table books for inspiration and placed the cutest little clay knot sculpture on top, which I found on Etsy. I originally planned to finish the space with a small olive tree to the room but couldn’t source one in time so I settled on a few sprigs of fresh eucalyptus in its place.

And that’s all for my minimalist living room refresh. Although the changes were relatively small, I feel that made a big impact in the general feel of the room. Focusing on a few key furniture pieces and finding pieces that worked with the existing furniture in the room really helped make the small space more functional and cohesive. Then limiting the color palette to soft, muted tones of whites and grays helped turn the space into a serene and cozy little corner to relax in each day. I’m really happy with how it turned out! Thanks to AllModern for helping me bring the space together. I’d love to hear your feedback on the living room project. Feel free to leave a comment down below and let me know what you think!
