My July Goals

Jessica Harumi My July Goals

How are we all doing after a long holiday weekend? I took a lot of time off which was very much needed and now I’m feeling a bit more relaxed optimistic about the rest of the month. I started off July with a big ole planning session, a mid-year check in if you will. This is something I talked about in my monthly newsletter and an upcoming daily vlog. It’s a practice I started a few years ago to get really clear on my goals and it always helps me feel a bit more in control of the direction of my life. So most of my goal-setting has been bigger picture (over the next 6 months) but today I wanted to share my more short-term goals for July.

LAST MONTH IN REVIEW

Before we get into new goals, I always like to take a moment to review the past month. Boy oh boy, was June a busy one! The most exciting part was celebrating my brother’s wedding, which went off without a hitch and was a wonderful celebration with the whole family. That weekend was followed by a lot of attending to personal family matters and time spent offline. I started a new book which I’m still slowly working my way through (I’ve made so little time to read lately) and while I’ve not been the most consistent, I have been better about staying more connected online with all of your lovely comments and messages. In hindsight, it was a very good idea not to attempt any big projects in June, as I was so consumed (and at times overwhelmed) with just keeping up with the day to day.

A Month of Movement

When it comes to setting and working towards goals, I try to be as realistic as possible. One thing I always struggle with is staying on track with personal health-related goals. When work or family obligations start to pile on, my exercise routine is always the first thing to get dropped off the list. This month I’d like to make some leeway on a personal goal of mine: to exercise every day. But I also know that high-intensity workouts are not really my thing. That’s why I’m challenging myself to at least 15 minutes of yoga every day for the rest of the month. It might seem like such a small effort to some but my hopes are that this will make daily stretching and exercise a habit that I can build on down the road.

Get More Zzzzs

My sleep schedule has been all over the place for the better half of a year now. I’m not kidding when I say I’m still on West Coast time! I’ve been staying up much later than I’d like, often doing a bit of work when I should probably be sleeping. This month I’d like to correct that if I can by going to sleep a bit earlier. Again, I’m trying to be as realistic as possible so that I can create lasting habits so I’m aiming to up my bedtime to no later than midnight. I’m also working on waking up earlier so that I can start my workday earlier, thus avoiding working late into the evening.

Streamline My Closet

After recently being featured on The Minimalist Wardrobe’s Case Study series, I had the realization that my closet had become a bit too large for my liking. It’s been a while since my last major wardrobe clearout (right before my move last year) and I thought it finally time for another round of streamlining. I’ve listed some pieces on my Poshmark account, donated some, and recycled others. Things are looking a little better but I feel there’s still more I could narrow down. I’m now more hesitant to give away clothing as I’ve often in the past donated things rather impulsively and later regretted it. That’s why I plan to continue editing down my closet slowly this month and next. I’m also beta-testing a new wardrobe app which I’m hoping will give me further insights into where I can streamline my wardrobe.
