October Playlist

After nearly a year long hiatus, I’ve decided to bring back the monthly playlist posts. I haven’t stopped sharing monthly playlists over on my Spotify but I have missed writing about my favorite tracks and reflecting on the music that moved me throughout the month.

These monthly playlists have come to feel like a diary entry of sorts. Music has this wonderful way of instantly transporting us back to the feelings and emotions of specific moments in life. I recently heard someone describe music as a vehicle with a powerful momentum and influence over our emotions and internal dialogue.

At times the playlists have felt very melancholy, a reflection of the natural ups and downs that we all experience. But it’s also been a good reminder to myself to be more aware of what kind of message I’m consuming and making a conscious effort to ensure that those messages are positive and productive. We all need the sad music, but we also need to change the track every once in a while so we don’t end up in an endless feedback loop.

Now on to the October playlist. This one is a mashup of mostly new-to-me artists along with some new tracks from old favorites. I’ve also come to love Instagram for discovering new music suggestions strangely enough. This was a very good month for new music from old favorites, including new tracks from Arctic Monkeys, Little Dragon, Steve Lacy, The Avalanches (in collaborating with Dev Hynes!), and BADBADNOTGOOD.

One of my favorite new discoveries this month is PawPaw Rod, a Hawaiian rapper and singer making some seriously catchy, quirky tunes. I also went through a little FKA Twigs phase at the start of this month after spotting her walking through Hackney and proceeding to have a full on fan girl moment. Her new album CAPRISONGS is the perfect album when you don’t know if you want to dance or cry (the answer is both). And the song I’ve had on repeat most recently has to be Dusk by Alice Phoebe Lou, which perfectly captures the melancholy vibe of this time of year when the days get shorter and colder and you need something to warm you up from the inside.

So that’s all for the monthly music chat. I hope you continue to soundtrack your life with lots of wonderful tunes.
