The Best Sustainable Denim: Hiut Denim Review

Denim from Cardigan

One of my favorite recent brand discoveries is Hiut Denim. I’ve been wearing my beloved ecrus straight leg style on repeat since they arrived in the mail in earlier this year. I’ve also received tons of questions about this particular style and the brand in general, which I hope to answer in this brand review today. In addition, I’ve recently received the same straight leg style in the new recycled denim style which I’ve featured here as well.

About the Brand

Hiut Denim is based in Cardigan, Wales, a small town with a history of denim manufacturing which the brand has attempted to revitalize by bringing their production back home. Their ethos centers around doing one thing well, denim and denim only. They’ve enlisted a small group of Grand Master denim makers with over 50,000 hours of experience to create a small production of roughly 200 jeans a week. This is a real embodiment of and commitment to slow fashion and one reason why I find the brand’s story so compelling.

The Eira Ecru Straight Jeans

This is the first style I’ve tried from Hiut Denim and it quickly became my most worn pair of jeans. The Eira is a classic high waisted straight leg jean that comes in ecru, black and indigo color options. The non-stretch denim is thick and a bit stiff at first but softens after a few washes. They have an ankle length crop and fit true to size with a slightly relaxed fit. I’ve found that they did shrink a bit in the wash and tend to wrinkle after washes or repeated wears. That said, I’m not one to iron jeans and they’re never so wrinkled that it’s bothered me too much. The lovely ecru color combined with the classic fit makes these jeans such a versatile wardrobe staple, slim enough to pair with oversized pieces on top and yet relaxed enough to wear with a more fitted top. They’re also the perfect length with flats and boots alike. These are my current go-to denim year round when I want to make a subtle statement.

Landfill Dropout Selvedge Denim

The newest addition to my denim collection, these have the same Eira straight leg fit but are made of Hiut’s recycled denim waste, creating a subtle multi-panel design for which no two are the same. This particular style was less consistent in sizing so I got the waist tailored for the perfect fit. These are also made of a stiffer non-stretch denim but they might soften a bit as I wash them more. I adore the multi-panel design as it adds an offbeat, quirky element to the most basic outfits while still being very wearable and easy to style, a great way to get my out of my styling comfort zone. A piece like this is a great stepping stone for those looking to inject more personality into a minimalist wardrobe while supporting a low-waste initiative from a sustainable brand.
