Capsule Wardrobe Series Part 2: Mastering the Basics
If you’ve read Part 1 of my Capsule Wardrobe Series, you will know that I’m currently shopping for some key pieces to beef up my basics. A full wardrobe is not necessarily a versatile one, and I’ve learned that the hard way. Having a solid foundation is key to being able to wear pieces in more than one way. Here is a rather extensive list of what I consider the basics that make up a great capsule wardrobe.

Tops
Three basic cotton t-shirts in white, black, and gray. I personally like crew neck or v-neckline. Uniqlo is great for very affordable, high quality basics. If you like a roomier fit, try the men’s t-shirts.
A fine knit sweater is something I reach for often. Uniqulo has so many great colors to choose from and they are a Merino wool blend so very cozy feeling.
A striped top looks good with everything. I like a 3/4 top for major french girl vibes. Extra points for boatneck neckline.
A white tailored shirt in 100% cotton is a necessity to any wardrobe. This is as versatile as a t-shirt but much more polished. This piece is easy to find just about anywhere.
A chunky knit sweater will come in handy in the colder months. Cashmere is the ultimate luxury but there are great and affordable wool-blend options out there too. Check out H&M, & Other Stories, and Zara for some good picks.
Two satin or silk camisoles in black and white. If you’re not ready to invest in a silk cami like this one from Everlane, there are some more affordable options on Asos.
Three cardigans in gray, beige, and black. Any style works, choose what suits you. I personally like a long, oversized fit. This one is a Mohair-blend cardigan from H&M and it’s right up my alley!
A thin black turtleneck for layering. This looks great on it’s own or tucked into pinafore dresses and a-line skirts.
Bottoms
Four pairs of jeans in a light, dark, white/off-white, and black wash. The fit is up to you and what suits you most. I like these Cheeky Straight Jeans from Everlane and they come in every wash you’ll ever need. They also have a ton of different styles to choose from.
A denim mini skirt or shorts in your choice of wash. I prefer light wash shorts and black mini skirts. You do you!
Slim black tailored pants. These are so versatile and can be dressed up or down easily with heels or sneakers. I’m always on the hunt for the perfect pair. Zara has a lot of great options for different fits. I would avoid a scrunchy elastic waistband as they make these look less polished. Anything fitted is ideal.
Dresses
A black strappy dress in a mini or midi length can be dressed up or down easily. Go for something in a flattering drape and in a silky material.
A shirt dress is another very versatile piece, and a new favorite of mine. This works for smart casual wear and can be styled in so many ways by unbuttoning a bit and rolling up the sleeves. There are a lot of options with lengths too.
Outerwear
A blazer is both a major trend and a classic wardrobe staple. I love how they look styled with denim and layered with dresses and sweaters. These are everywhere right now and there are a ton of options for each budget. For starters a classic black, slightly oversized fit is a failsafe.
A denim jacket is a no-brainer when it comes to styling. Topshop has some great options this season and I love this oversized fit. Of course, Levi’s and Madewell are other great options.
A leather biker jacket can be quite an investment piece, but is definitely worth it. This has been my most loved piece in my wardrobe for many years now. Zara has this great faux-leather option to hold you over while you save up for “the one”. If you’re ready to invest, Zara and Mango have some great leather options at lower price points and you can’t go wrong with AllSaints.
A tailored coat in light gray, camel or navy. This is a timeless investment piece. Luckily, this style is all everywhere this season. Zara has some nice pieces, as does Topshop.
Accessories
A small black crossbody bag that goes with everything. This can be used for dressier occassions and day to day. I love this 100% vegan leather Fiona bag from JW Pei.
A black tote bag to hold your laptop and more. This leather option from Madewell is a bit of a cult classic and so sleek.
Shoes
A simple black heel. I prefer a low block heeled sandal. This pair from Steve Madden come in several colors and finishes. I love the suede for evening looks.
A black leather heeled bootie. There are endless options in this style. They look great paired with pants, jeans, skirts and dress too.
A black Chelsea boot with a low heel or flat. These look so cool tucked into denim skinny jeans for Fall and they are super practical as well. Asos has great, affordable options, my favorite being the Asos Absolute leather boots. For a classic look, try a rounded toe.
A smart pair of mules or dressy flats are a must, for comfort and for a well-rounded wardrobe. Anything Gucci-esque is a winner. There are so many affordable options out there, including Asos, Topshop, and Urban Outfitters .
A pair of sneakers can dress an outfit up or down. I love these Adidas Stan Smiths to pair with tailored pants. Another classic streetwear brand is Vans for a casual slip on style.
