Tips for Packing a Carry On

I've just returned home from a five day trip to New York City and while I will be sharing much more from said trip, I wanted to first address the topic of packing. I think we all have at one time or another, completely over or under packed for a short trip. There are so many unpredictable situations while traveling (especially to somewhere new) that there will naturally be some instances for which you will long for some piece left hanging in your closet at home. Packing is no easy feat and when you're trying to travel "light," it becomes twice as complicated. But after some trial and error, I think I may have narrowed down the carry-on suitcase essentials to a few key pieces.

Versatile Outerwear

Oversized Denim Jacket - Topshop | Biker Jacket - Mango | Blazer - H&M

This piece is gong to vary based on the season in which you're traveling. Typically, a classic denim jacket will work in the chilliest summer nights. For early Fall, I would suggest a smart blazer in a checkered pattern, which I've been seeing everywhere this season and last. These come in a variety of colors and patterns (including bold solid colors) and look amazing with jeans, skirts, and dresses. If you're traveling in Winter, opt for a leather jacket for layering options and added warmth. Whichever you choose, the key is to find something that looks smart when layered, to elevate your basics, without much extra thought on your part.

Your Tried & True Denim

Wedgie High-Rise Jeans - Levi's | BDG High-Rise Cropped Flared Jeans - Urban Outfitters

One pair of jeans can go a long way. The key is to find a par with less elastic in them so they don't become misshaped in between washes. Levis are alway a safe bet, and Urban Outfitters BDG's are a personal favorite as they stretch without losing their shape and fit like a dream. For travel, go with a throwback (90's) cut, such as high-waisted or cropped, flared jeans. This will enhance the details of your fit while still allowing you to be super comfy, a win-win.

A Day to Night Dress

Button Down Midi Dress - Urban Outfitters | Red Dress - Zara

As someone who doesn't often turn to a dress for effortless comfort, I will say that when you find the right one (the one that fits perfectly and feels amazing) it will greatly simplify your travel wardrobe in so many ways. A midi is a safe bet pretty much year-round unless you're traveling to a particularly frigid climate, in which case I would suggest a maxi so you can hide thermal leggings underneath. A flowing empire waist or wrap dress looks so chic when paired with sneakers and can easily be dressed up with a pair of heels or flats. I personally love the mixture of super girly with street wear for a versatile travel look.

The Everywhere Top

Leopard Print Top - Topshop | Boxy Top - AsosSatin Pyjama Tie Shirt - Topshop

If you're anything like me, you prioritize comfort while traveling, because let's face it, after a long day of exploring you may sometimes feel as if you're wearing all the grime of the city on your skin. And while I certainly don't underestimate the power of a t-shirt, sometimes a blouse can give you that put together feeling after a long and tiring day of travel. Make sure to pack at least one top or blouse that is comfortable and slightly more dressy than a t-shirt.

A Seasonal Knit

Basic Sweater - Zara | Knit Sweater - And Other Stories

If you're someone who gets chilly all the time, year-round then I would suggest carrying a thin knit as a backup in the Spring and Summer. This can easily be adjusted for the more brisk Fall and Winter months. If you're traveling during Winter, this section will probably be a bulk of your precious carry-on space. But choosing a couple of versatile pieces, perhaps a gray and brown, or a fitted and oversized knit, will go a long ways. There's just nothing like a knit sweater to instantly up your layering game and give you maximum coolness and coziness.

Street Smart Shoes

Old Skool Vans | Chelsea Boots - Asos

A few days before my trip, I realized that I did not own a pair of practical sneakers (aside from a very old and very dirty pair of Converse that I may never part with) and would be spending a majority of my time trekking around on foot. How this happened, I'm not sure but I jumped at the chance to add a cool pair of sneakers into the wardrobe. The pair I settled on was an easy choice: black Old Skool Vans. I think this shoe look so great paired with flowy dresses, suits and jeans alike. If sneakers aren't your thing, trying opting for a pair of ballet flats in the warmer months and Chelsea Boots in the cooler months.

The Comfy Bra

Bralette - Madewell | Tank Bra - Everlane

For all the prolonged sitting and constant moving, a comfortable bra will literally add hours to your day. There is nothing worse than feeling the ache of a bra that's too tight or too restricting. Sometimes you just need something with a bit more give and a soft cup bra will allow you that. And it's an added bonus if this bra has some lace detail to pair with lower cut camis for an elegant and laid back glamour.

Statement Shades

As If! Sunglasses - Quay | Sunglasses - Topshop | Subculture Sunglasses - Quay

While most other items on this list have been all about utilizing basics, I do believe sunglasses are a chance to go all out, especially while traveling. Headed to the beach or a festival? Why not rock a pair of reflective iridescent aviators? Heading to the city, I opted for a pair of dark, oversized shades with a tortoiseshell frame, à la Holly Golightly. A playful Cat Eye is also an excellent choice for most occassions.

The Minimal Accessories

Left Necklace - H&M | Right Necklace - H&M

I do think the easiest and most stress-free option for jewelry while traveling is to go the minimal route. Try a simple gold chain pendant necklace and a pair of thick hoops to get you through every scenario. You won't even need to worry about the annoying jewelry packing (and tangled chains) if you're wearing your day-to-day pieces. That said, one piece I think is worth packing to switch things up is a pair of statement earrings. And if you just aren't cut out for that minimalist lifestyle when it comes to your jewelry, then consider a travel bag to take extra care of your beloved pieces while on the go.
